Principal's Message

Welcome to all new students and welcome back to all returning 7th and 8th grade, Cougars!

My name is Mrs. Latimer and I'm the principal at Sylvan Middle School.  This is my second year at Sylvan and I’m excited to welcome you to Sylvan Middle School. Mr. Lyon is returning to Sylvan in his second year as Vice Principal and we are welcoming a new Vice Principal to our school, Mrs. Schuermann.

As the Principal, one of my main roles is to help foster a safe and positive learning environment for students, teachers, staff, and families, where all voices can feel heard, acknowledged, supported, and embraced.  And we have so many things planned for this school year to help us continue to do just that! Coming up very soon, we have our first skate night of the year (August 30th), Sports-O-Rama (September 14th) and our first Dance of the Year which is a night dance! (September 27th 6-8pm). This year will also be having student rallies, hosted by our WEB and Student Government students.

As we move forward with fostering both a safe and positive learning environment, we encourage all families to read both our updated cell phone and tardy policies for the 2023-2024 school year. Both policies can be found in the student planner, as well as here on our school website. With cell phones being the number one cause of disruption to the learning environment, our updated cell phone policy supports increased engagement in classroom instruction. Likewise, we know that the number of instructional minutes a student receives can be directly linked to student success and positive academic outcomes. Our updated tardiness policy supports helping our students to understand the importance of showing up to class on time, ready to work and learn. We need our students in the classroom, engaged in learning.

I’m a firm believer that communication amongst teachers, staff, and parents, is essential to helping each student achieve their very best. I’m looking forward to working together to see all Cougars set, reach and exceed their goals. This year, we are offering a Parent University series, designed to support and foster positive collaboration and communication between home and school.

I’m looking forward to a great year of learning and collaboration ahead.

Respectfully,

Nicole Latimer
